Chapter Twenty-One
Autumn
"I thought 'have a piece' meant eating a sandwich," I say as we walk into the Cafe of Doom side by side. Jack has relaxed somewhat, but encountering his three cousins knocked him off-kilter even more than he had been before they showed up. We had a real conversation, an important one, right before that, so I'm feeling pretty darn good right now.
Jack doesn't hate me. That's what I call progress.
He'd told me that when I left, it devastated him. I still don't know what to think or say about that. The end of our marriage devastated me too. But I was the one who left, so it's up to me to fix things and make sure we can at least be friends. Our child deserves that much.
We've just sat down at one of the outdoor tables when a waitress approaches us. It's Deirdre, the girl who spilled soup all over Jack last time we were here. She halts several feet away, her eyes going wide.
"Don't worry," I say to her. "We're only ordering dessert. And we won't be sniping at each other the entire time either."
The girl relaxes, her eyes no longer bulging. She gives us menus. "Would ye like me to wait while ye decide what to order, or should I come back in a few minutes?"
"You can wait," I say. "I already know what I want. But I don't know how to pronounce it, so I'll point instead."
I jab a finger at the item on the menu labeled "cranachan." What that is, I'm not entirely sure. The description on the menu calls it "a popular Scottish dessert made with toasted oats, raspberries, cream, and Ben Nevis single-malt Scotch whisky." Sounds yummy. But only if I can order an alcohol-free version.
Jack raises his brows at me. "Do you even know what cranachan is?"
"Sure. The menu told me."
He seems skeptical, like he thinks I'll be shocked by what the dessert contains. "It has whisky in it, you know."
"I was going to ask for a whisky-free version." I glance at Deirdre. "Can I do that?"
"Of course," Deirdre says.
Jack gives our waitress a polite smile. "We'll both have cranachan. Thank you, Deirdre."
The waitress blushes like she did the last time Jack and I came to this cafe, then she bustles off to get our treats.
"You do know that girl has a big crush on you," I say. "She blushes every time she sees you."
"How would you know that? You've seen the lass twice."
"And both times she blushed and gazed at you dreamily. Face it, she's crushing on you."
Jack rolls his eyes, contorting one side of his mouth. "You are imagining things. The lass does not feel that way about me. I donnae even know the girl."
"But she knows you." I lean forward and lower my voice. "I bet you've got a fan club of darling wee lassies who think you're the hottest thing since Tabasco sauce."
"I don't know what you're on about, but it's rubbish."
"No, what you're full of is rubbish.
